Data Governance: Building Your Team for Success

The decision has been made; it is now time to implement a data governance program. Whether it was a single event or the culmination of multiple events that triggered this new initiative, the foremost question remains the same. While data governance initiatives create the organizational structure to strategically manage and tactically deliver the required goals, the roles and responsibilities within this structure need to be clearly defined to ensure success.

Defining the Roles

At a higher level, roles and responsibilities need to be well-defined before designating specific individuals for the task. They are defined so that a well-formed and transparent structure can be put in place. Once established, it becomes easier to identify who has the necessary skill set to fit the definition, or at least, you would know what to look for. It is quite possible that an individual may assume more than one role, which can conversely be fulfilled by more than one individual. As with most roles and responsibilities in business, ultimately, what these roles are called is not as relevant as the fact that they are clearly defined and their responsibilities effectively communicated to the individuals charged with carrying them out.
